Getting around Phuket for a shoot.

Transport is part of the creative plan. The right choice depends on your call time, equipment, locations and how much daylight you can afford to lose.

The visual plan

At a glance.

First, get the crew to the right part of Phuket

Phuket International Airport is in the north. If your first shoot is in Old Town, Rawai or a southern resort, that transfer belongs in the production schedule. Build a buffer for baggage, collecting gear and traffic. A sunset booking should not depend on an on-time flight.

The airport lists public buses, taxis, app-based rides and self-drive rental as transport options. Confirm the current pickup point with the operator or airport before arrival.

Private driver or booked transfer: best for a working day

For several locations, cases of equipment or a crew, a vehicle with a known driver is usually the most reliable choice. You can load once, leave nonessential cases securely while shooting, and move on your own schedule. Agree on the route, waiting time, parking, overtime and return journey before the day starts.

For a single portrait session or a one-way airport arrival, a licensed taxi or app-based ride may be enough. Recheck whether your exact shoot location allows a quick pickup.

Rental car: flexibility for a small, self-directed shoot

A car can work for a two-person scouting trip or a light-kit shoot with several stops. Make sure your driver can legally drive in Thailand, understands local road conditions and has enough time to park safely. Plan where equipment will go before choosing vehicle size.

A scooter may look convenient for sightseeing, but it is rarely a sensible solution for lights, tripods, batteries and a production schedule.

Phuket Smart Bus: useful on the west-coast route

The airport’s official listing shows the Smart Bus connecting Phuket Airport with Cherng Talay, Surin, Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata and Rawai. This is useful for a traveller moving between a beach hotel and the airport with little equipment. It is less suited to a sunrise call, multiple brief stops or a crew carrying cases.

Fares, stops and timetables can change. Check the airport’s Smart Bus listing and the operator on your travel day.

Build the route around light

  • Put the most time-sensitive scene first: sunrise, sunset or a room that only receives direct light briefly.
  • Group locations by area. Avoid crossing the island between every setup.
  • Allow time for unloading, permits, styling and walking—not just driving.
  • Keep one weather-flexible scene for a change of plan.
  • Confirm parking and property access with the location contact.

Use the live Phuket sunset time as a planning anchor, then build in a generous arrival window. For setting ideas, see where to take photos in Phuket.
